What happened
Foundation Assisting Seniors, a Henderson-based nonprofit, has nearly doubled its space, KTNV reported. The group provides free medical equipment and wellness services to older adults and veterans. It says the larger space will let it serve more people in the community.
According to KTNV, the foundation is marking the expansion with a public open house Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is at its Henderson location, 2518 Anthem Village Drive, Ste. 110.
Who the foundation serves
Free equipment and wellness services
KTNV reported that the organization provides medical equipment, wellness support and daily wellness check services at no cost. Its services are open to adults 50 and older across the Las Vegas Valley. The station also described the group as serving veterans.
Why the group says it expanded
KTNV, citing census data, reported that seniors make up nearly 40 percent of Clark County's population. The foundation told the station it created the expansion to meet that growing need. What clients told KTNV
Help after a hospital stay
Jerry Hartman told KTNV that the foundation made a critical difference when his wife was hospitalized earlier this year. He said a surgery went badly and she spent 3 months in intensive care. Hartman said the foundation "provided us with all the tools that we needed to make the transition from rehab to home rehab."
Hartman told the station that his wife spent 5 months unable to walk, with a dropped foot and weakened muscles. He said she is now walking with a walker the foundation provided and is using a commode it supplied. He described her as doing great.
Daily calls for people living alone
The daily wellness check program calls seniors who live alone each morning, according to KTNV. Annette Held, who lives alone, told the station, "It is real security just to know I get that call every morning." She said the calls mean she will not be left on the floor for 12 hours before someone checks on her.
What staff say
Janice Barragan, the foundation's community relations and development coordinator, told KTNV the work has been life changing for her personally. She said she sees people come in needing supplies and services. "You see how thankful and how grateful they are that we were there for them," Barragan said.
