What happened
Airbnb is turning on its strengthened anti-party technology in Las Vegas and across the United States for Halloween weekend, the company said Monday, according to the Las Vegas Sun. The goal is to stop reservations the company considers more likely to lead to disruptive parties.
In an email to the Sun, Airbnb said the system helped deter about 40 people in Las Vegas from booking an entire home during Halloween weekend last year. The company said this is the sixth year in a row it has activated the stronger system for the holiday.
How the system works
Blocking or redirecting bookings
Airbnb told the Sun the technology weighs several factors to flag reservation attempts that may carry a higher risk of a disruptive party. When a booking is flagged, the system either blocks it or steers the guest toward other options on Airbnb, such as private rooms and hotels.
Rules for parties and minors
The company's community disturbance policy bans open-invitation gatherings, including parties promoted publicly or on social media, and gatherings that cause disturbances regardless of size. Hosts also may not advertise listings as party-friendly. Minor problems can bring warnings, while repeated or serious ones can lead to suspended or removed listings and accounts, according to the policy.
Airbnb also reminded parents and guardians that people under 18 cannot hold accounts. Adult account holders cannot book a stay for a minor unless they are present for the whole trip. Violations could cost account holders their accounts and future trips and leave them financially responsible for property damage, the company said, along with possible liability if authorities step in after a disruptive party.
Help for hosts and neighbors
Airbnb said it is sharing updated guidance with U.S. hosts on setting expectations in listing descriptions and house rules, spotting warning signs and contacting support. It also offers a neighborhood support line where residents can report parties in progress, a 24-hour safety line for hosts and guests, and noise sensors for hosts. Residents following neighborhood safety issues can use the support line to report a party as it happens.
How often parties happen
Airbnb described parties on its platform as extremely rare. Across Nevada in 2025, 0.07% of reservations led to a party report to Airbnb, compared with about 0.06% nationwide, according to the company's press release.
Nationally, the company said its measures stopped more than 23,500 people from booking an entire home last Halloween weekend. That included about 3,230 people in Texas and 3,170 in Florida. The measures also deterred nearly 3,000 people in Canada.
The Clark County legal fight
Ordinance and federal lawsuit
The announcement comes as Airbnb remains in a legal battle with Clark County over short-term rentals, the Sun reported. On Aug. 18, commissioners voted 5-0 to approve an ordinance barring booking platforms such as Airbnb and Vrbo from processing reservations for unlicensed rentals in unincorporated areas.
Airbnb and the Greater Las Vegas Short Term Rental Association are plaintiffs in a federal lawsuit challenging the county's licensing rules. A preliminary injunction issued by a federal judge in December 2025 has kept the county from enforcing parts of those rules. More housing coverage is on our real estate page.
Why Halloween
On Oct. 2, 2020, Airbnb announced it would ban one-night rentals of entire homes in the United States and Canada over Halloween weekend. That came nearly a year after a shooting killed five people on Oct. 31, 2019, at an unauthorized Halloween party at an Airbnb rental in Orinda, California, as the Associated Press reported at the time.
