How to use this map

Researching a new market

Investors comparing cities can search each market, switch categories on and off, and compare where property crime and violent crime cluster. Look at the same area across several weeks before drawing conclusions, because one week can be unusual.

Moving to an unfamiliar town

Search the ZIP code or neighborhood you are considering, then zoom in. Busy commercial streets, stadiums and nightlife districts log more reports because more people pass through them, not only because more people live there.

FBI crime rates for every town

Every US search also shows the latest full year of official FBI crime statistics for the local police department and the county sheriff, compared with the state and national averages. That covers small towns whose police do not publish a live map.

Why some places have no dots

We only map places whose police department publishes incident-level open data. Many departments, including some large ones, publish only yearly totals or nothing at all. When you search one of those places, the map shows the nearest cities we cover. We add new cities as departments open their data.

How fresh the data is

We check every source every hour. Each department decides how often it publishes, so some cities show yesterday's reports and others run days or months behind. Every city's newest date is shown in the list and on its own page.

About this data

Reports come straight from each police department's official open data portal, and every city page names and links its source. A report records what was reported at the time; it is not a conviction, and some reports turn out to be unfounded. Departments place locations at the block or intersection level to protect privacy. Use the map to see patterns, not to judge a single address. For Las Vegas coverage, see our Las Vegas crime map.
