Las Vegas Could See First Measurable Halloween Rain Since 1987, but Forecasters Say Plans Can Stay

The National Weather Service says Saturday may bring the valley's first measurable Halloween rain since 1987, though showers should be spotty and light enough that trick-or-treat plans can go ahead.

What happened

Southern Nevada may record its first measurable Halloween rainfall since 1987, according to the National Weather Service Las Vegas office, as reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal. In 1987, the Las Vegas Valley received a quarter of an inch of rain on the holiday.

Forecasters do not expect Saturday's weather to disrupt trick-or-treating. Families heading out may still want a poncho or umbrella, the Review-Journal reported.

What forecasters expect for Saturday

National Weather Service meteorologist Brayden Murdoch told the Review-Journal the day will be gray and at times breezy. "It's going to be a cloudy day, some breezy moments, but not enough to change your plans over," he said.

Light and spotty showers

Murdoch described only slight chances of trace amounts of rain. He said the valley might not match the quarter inch from 1987, though some areas could get a little wet.

He also said the light to moderate showers expected through the weekend should be spottier rather than affecting the entire valley. The gray skies are expected to stay in place through Sunday.

Temperatures

Weekend highs are forecast to reach the 70s, according to the Review-Journal. Lows are expected to fall just below 60 degrees.

Rain already arrived Friday

Clouds moved into the valley Friday morning and are expected to stay through the weekend. Some parts of the valley saw rain Friday, the Review-Journal reported.

Henderson gauges

County rainfall gauges recorded up to 0.20 inches in Henderson on Friday morning, according to the Review-Journal. Readers can find more of our related storm coverage on the site.

A wet October for the valley

The weekend rain adds to what the Review-Journal called one of the wettest Octobers in recent memory. Tropical storm remnants hit the valley hard on Oct. 11.

How this month compares

Harry Reid International Airport had recorded 1.19 inches of rain this month as of Thursday, the Review-Journal reported. The October average is 0.32 inches.

The wettest October on record came in 2005, when 1.45 inches fell. More weather and neighborhood updates are posted in our community section.

What it means for Halloween plans

Based on the National Weather Service forecast, trick-or-treat plans should not need to change. Residents should expect cloudy skies, some breezy moments and slight chances of trace amounts of rain in some areas.

Because the showers are expected to be spotty rather than valley-wide, some neighborhoods may stay dry while others get a little wet. The Review-Journal suggested trick-or-treaters may want to pack a poncho or umbrella.

What to watch next

  • Whether measurable rain falls in the valley on Saturday, which would be the first on Halloween since 1987.
  • Spotty light to moderate showers and gray skies that forecasters say could last through Sunday.
  • The final October rainfall total at Harry Reid International Airport compared with the 2005 record of 1.45 inches.
