What happened
The National Weather Service's Las Vegas office issued a flood advisory Friday for the southeast part of the Las Vegas Valley, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The advisory covered eastern Henderson and the Lake Las Vegas area and was set to run until 3:15 p.m.
The advisory followed heavy rain from thunderstorms just after noon. The Review-Journal reported that 0.50 inches of rain fell in a 30-minute span in that area. A weather service spokesperson told the newspaper that Henderson had recorded 0.75 inches of rain as of Friday afternoon.
Where the advisory applied
Eastern Henderson and Lake Las Vegas
The advisory focused on the east side of Henderson and the Lake Las Vegas area, where the heaviest bursts of rain were reported. The weather service called out that part of the valley in a post on X aimed at east-side residents, saying thunderstorms there were producing heavy rainfall.
Several waves of storms
Friday's advisory came as several rounds of showers and thunderstorms moved across Las Vegas, the Review-Journal reported. The valley also saw a few scattered thunderstorms on Thursday, according to the newspaper.
What the weather service told residents
In its post on X, the weather service urged people in the affected area to watch for water moving through local washes and for low water crossings that had flooded. "Be mindful of flowing washes in the area and flooded low water crossings," the agency wrote, as quoted by the Review-Journal.
The guidance was directed at the eastern Henderson and Lake Las Vegas neighborhoods covered by the advisory. More coverage of storms and other safety issues around the valley is collected on our public safety page.
A wet stretch for Southern Nevada
Coming after Tropical Storm Rachel
The latest storms arrived less than two weeks after the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel brought record-setting rainfall to the area, according to the Review-Journal. The newspaper has reported that Rachel's storms, which landed on the west valley on a Sunday, broke the daily rainfall record for Las Vegas and tied an all-time record for the month of October.
The Review-Journal also reported that strong thunderstorms hit Henderson and parts of the south valley on a Monday, one day after Rachel's remnants soaked Las Vegas. The newspaper reported that a popular three-day event at Sunset Park would not take place on Sunday because the remnants of the storm were expected to bring severe weather.
A possible Halloween first since 1987
The weather service's Las Vegas office said Southern Nevada could see its first measurable rain on Halloween since 1987, the Review-Journal reported. That year, the Las Vegas Valley received a quarter of an inch of rain on the holiday. Residents across the valley can follow neighborhood-level updates through our neighborhoods section.
