Henderson DMV office closes for good Wednesday as Nevada's largest DMV prepares to open in Silverado Ranch Oct. 26
The Henderson DMV shuts its doors Wednesday, days after the Donovan Street office closed. A new 72,000-square-foot Silverado Ranch facility will replace both, but it does not open until Oct. 26.
What happened
Wednesday is the last day of operations at the Henderson location of the Department of Motor Vehicles, KTNV reported. The closure follows the shutdown of the DMV's Donovan Street office, which closed its doors last Friday, according to the station.
The DMV said both offices are closing because of aging and outdated infrastructure, KTNV reported. A related KTNV headline describes the two closures as affecting the Henderson and North Las Vegas locations.
What replaces the two offices
A single facility in Silverado Ranch
According to KTNV, the two offices will be replaced by one 72,000-square-foot building in Silverado Ranch. The station reported that the new building is now the largest DMV location in Nevada.
Main office and commercial licensing under one roof
The Silverado Ranch facility will house both the DMV's main office and its commercial driver's license operations, KTNV reported. DMV officials told the station the building is designed to better serve Southern Nevada's growing population.
A gap before the new office opens
The Silverado Ranch location is not set to open until Oct. 26, according to KTNV, and appointments there are not yet available. That leaves residents with two offices closed and the replacement still nearly two weeks from opening.
In the meantime, the DMV recommends that people who need in-person services make appointments at its other locations, the station reported. The DMV also says many services can be handled online through its website.
How residents are reacting
Beating the deadline
Cathy Stuart was at the Henderson office on Tuesday to get a driver's permit for her son, KTNV reported. She told the station she made a point of going before Wednesday's closure and was glad she did.
Stuart said waiting would have upended the day for both her work and her son's, and that she would have taken time off. "We would have had to drive farther with the gas prices," she told KTNV.
Concerns about distance
Stuart also questioned why residents should have to travel farther to handle routine business. "It's sad because we live here, we work here," she said, according to the station. KTNV reported that for locals who rely on the Henderson location, the closure is already creating real disruptions.
What Henderson residents can do now
Based on the DMV guidance reported by KTNV, residents with business before Oct. 26 can schedule an appointment at another open location or check whether their task can be completed online. Appointments at Silverado Ranch cannot be booked yet, according to the station.
The DMV has framed the consolidation as a response to outdated buildings and a growing population in Southern Nevada, KTNV reported. For more on changes to public services around the valley, see our community coverage and our guide to local neighborhoods.
What to watch next
- The scheduled Oct. 26 opening of the 72,000-square-foot Silverado Ranch DMV facility.
- When appointments at the Silverado Ranch location become available, which KTNV reported they are not yet.
- Until the new office opens, the DMV recommends appointments at its other locations and using online services where possible.
