What happened

Haas Automation is trying to fill more than 1,000 jobs at its new plant in Henderson, KTNV Channel 13 reported. The company held its final job fair of the year on Saturday at the facility on Via Inspirada.

According to KTNV, hundreds of people came to the plant by appointment hoping to join the company. The facility includes more than two million square feet of factory space, the station reported.

The jobs and the pay

KTNV reported that Haas is looking to fill positions throughout the factory. The station described the effort as a major hiring push.

Positions the company is filling

The company is seeking operators, engineers, machinists, inventory associates, assemblers and support staff, according to KTNV. The station did not break down how many openings exist in each category.

Starting wages

Starting pay is around $23 an hour, KTNV reported. Some positions can eventually pay upwards of $100 an hour, according to the station.

Training before work begins

New hires will go through extensive training before they start working on the machines, KTNV reported. Bob Murray, general manager and CEO of Haas Automation, told the station that "every employee has an iPad" with information on how to build machines.

What Floyd and the company said

KTNV spoke with a man identified as Floyd, who said he started working on cars at age 13 by decaling them. He told the station that a mentor in Los Angeles, who has since died, later helped him with machine work.

Floyd called the plant "one of the great places that you can get in engineering." He told KTNV, "there's very few engineering jobs available in Nevada."

Murray said there is no shortage of strong candidates. "The quality of applicants has been outstanding," he told KTNV, adding that the company is "extremely excited about the factory."

Why the Henderson plant matters to Haas

KTNV reported that the new plant is expected to help double Haas' annual revenue once it is fully up and running, which the station said is expected next fall. Murray told KTNV, "Typically, I build 10-15,000 machines per year."

Murray said the Henderson site would give the company "capabilities to go to two to $3 billion in revenue," according to KTNV. More coverage of growth across the valley is in our development section.

What KTNV did not report

The KTNV report did not say how many people have been hired so far or give a date for future hiring events. It also did not detail which roles carry the higher pay levels.

What to watch next

  • Whether the Henderson plant is fully up and running by next fall, as KTNV reported is expected.
  • Progress toward the goal of more than 1,000 hires at the Via Inspirada facility.
  • Further developments at the Henderson operation, which company leaders told KTNV are still to come.
