What happened

The Clark County School District's next elementary school will carry the name of the late state Sen. Joyce Woodhouse, the Las Vegas Sun reported. The Board of School Trustees voted unanimously Thursday to approve the name for the campus being built in the Skye Canyon neighborhood in northwest Las Vegas.

The vote confirmed a recommendation that a school naming committee made in September. Several of Woodhouse's friends attended the meeting to ask trustees to back that choice, according to the Sun.

Who Joyce Woodhouse was

A career in CCSD classrooms and offices

Woodhouse, a Henderson Democrat, spent 40 years as a teacher and administrator with CCSD before retiring, the Sun reported. She then served three terms in the Nevada Legislature.

Work on school funding in Carson City

In the Legislature, she was a leader on public education reforms. The Sun noted that one of her notable roles was as an architect of Nevada's current per-pupil funding formula for the state's public schools.

Tributes at the board meeting

Board member Ramona Esparza-Stoffregan recalled Woodhouse visiting Valley High School several times while Esparza-Stoffregan was principal there. She said Woodhouse once passed on the grand opening of an on-campus wellness clinic, asking instead to come on a quieter day so she could spend time with students and teachers. "She demonstrated that strength of humility," Esparza-Stoffregan said, according to the Sun.

Sandy Miller, a former teacher and Nevada first lady who has her own namesake elementary school in Las Vegas, also spoke. "In a city famous for magicians, Joyce could make opportunities appear for children who might otherwise never have the opportunity," Miller said, the Sun reported.

Details on the new school

Size, cost and location

CCSD broke ground on the future Joyce Woodhouse Elementary School in June. The 108,000-square-foot campus sits at North Shaumber Road and Skye Canyon Park Drive, near the northwest edge of Las Vegas, and is scheduled to open in August 2027. The $92.9 million school will have 53 classrooms and room for 850 students, according to the Sun.

Relief for crowded nearby campuses

The new school is meant to help ease crowding at nearby campuses in one of the few parts of the valley where enrollment is growing, even as enrollment across the district declines. District data cited by the Sun show that Divich Elementary and Bilbray are over capacity, with more than 1,000 and 600 students, respectively.

Why it matters for future school building

District officials have said Woodhouse Elementary will be the last school CCSD builds "for capacity" for the near future, the Sun reported. That term refers to schools built to address enrollment growth and crowding in an area. Projects that replace aging buildings or provide specialized options such as magnet schools fall outside that category. For more on the district, see our Clark County schools coverage.

Attendance boundaries under discussion

The district's Attendance Zone Advisory Commission began discussing the new school's attendance boundaries this week. Under the tentative plan, most of the school's students would come from the neighborhood now zoned for Divich Elementary, just to the south, and from the area served by the Bilbray and Scherkenbach sister schools to the east.

What to watch next

  • The Attendance Zone Advisory Commission's continued work on boundaries for Woodhouse Elementary, which are tentative for now.
  • Final boundary decisions for families now zoned for Divich, Bilbray and Scherkenbach.
  • Construction progress toward the scheduled August 2027 opening at North Shaumber Road and Skye Canyon Park Drive.
